Common Requests
Building a Patio Around How You Actually Use the Space
The most common regret with a patio is size and layout, not finish. Walking through how the space gets used day to day usually changes the footprint before anything is poured.
- Furniture placement
- A dining table with chairs pulled out needs considerably more room than the table's own footprint, and a lounge grouping needs walking room behind it.
- Grill and cooking area
- Where the grill sits determines traffic flow, clearance from the house, and whether a separate area is worth including.
- Walking paths
- Routes to the gate, the yard, and the back door should stay clear once furniture is in place, rather than cutting between seats.
- Door access and thresholds
- Finished height has to work with door swings and thresholds, and the transition from the house should feel level and intentional.
- Shade and sun exposure
- West-facing space is unusable on summer afternoons without shade, which affects both where the patio goes and whether a cover is in the plan.

- Runoff needs a path away from the house, and downspouts near the patio may need redirecting as part of the work.

Patios sit right against the house, which makes grading the most important prep conversation. Water has to move away from the foundation, and the finished patio height has to work with door thresholds and existing slabs.

- Removal of sod, roots, and soft or organic material in the footprint
- Compaction of the subgrade across the full pour area

Reinforcement and Material Considerations
Patio slabs carry lighter loads than driveways, but reinforcement still matters — especially where the patio will support a cover, an outdoor kitchen, or a hot tub. Those decisions are made per project rather than by a blanket rule.

Patio estimates move mostly with size, finish, and access. A stamped patio behind a narrow gate is a different job than a broom-finished slab with open driveway access, even at identical square footage.

Details That Shape the Project
Layout, Slope and Connecting to the House
A patio sits directly against the structure, which makes grading the most consequential decision on the job. Water has to move away from the foundation, and the finished surface has to land at a height that works with door thresholds and any existing slab. On flat backyards, achieving usable fall without creating a noticeable tilt underfoot is a matter of careful layout rather than a fixed rule.
Where new concrete meets the house slab or a builder patio, the transition is detailed deliberately — an isolation joint at the structure, a planned joint line at the tie-in, and a decision about whether to match the existing finish or make the difference intentional with a border. New and existing concrete rarely match exactly in color, so a designed transition usually looks better than an attempted match.
Before we pour, we mark the footprint on the ground so you can stand in it with furniture positions in mind. That single step catches more sizing problems than any drawing.
Covered and Uncovered Outdoor Areas
Covered space and open space are used differently, and the concrete work reflects that. A slab that another contractor will later cover has support to plan for at post locations, and any sleeves the gas or electrical trade needs are far easier to coordinate before the pour than to cut in afterward.
Our scope is the concrete surface. We do not build covers, outdoor kitchens or screened rooms; where another contractor is building one, we coordinate with them so the slab is detailed for what lands on it.

Replacing or Extending a Patio You Already Have
Many Cypress-area homes came with a small builder patio that stops well short of usable. Extending it outward or wrapping it around the corner is a common scope, and it works best when the tie-in and the joint line are planned rather than improvised.
Where an existing patio is cracked, settled, or holding water, replacement lets the ground underneath be corrected and the layout rethought at the same time. Where the slab is sound but tired-looking, resurfacing or a decorative overlay can change the appearance without removing it. Which of those fits your patio depends on what the slab and base are doing, and that's what the site visit is for.
Finishes, Comfort and Upkeep
Finish choice affects appearance, surface temperature, slip resistance, and maintenance. Broom finishes are practical and low-maintenance. Stamped and colored surfaces offer more design range and need periodic resealing. Exposed aggregate is textured and forgiving underfoot. Lighter tones stay cooler in full sun than dark ones, which matters on an uncovered west-facing patio in July.

- Wait for our go-ahead before placing heavy furniture or a hot tub
- Rinse the surface periodically; avoid harsh de-icing chemicals
- Reseal stamped or colored finishes on the interval we recommend
- Keep planters and irrigation from constantly saturating one area
- Keep control joints clear of soil and debris

It depends on the furniture and activity you're planning. We chalk the footprint on the ground during the site visit so you can stand in the space and adjust before anything is poured.
We can pour to the same elevation and use a similar finish, but new and existing concrete rarely match in color exactly. A border band or intentional joint line is often the cleaner solution.
Texture and sealer choice both affect traction. If the patio is near a pool or shaded and often wet, tell us and we'll factor that into the finish and sealer recommendation.
It can when it's designed for it from the start. Post locations and bearing points need to be identified before the pour, and structural requirements are evaluated for your specific plan. CXS pours the slab; the cover itself is built by another contractor.
Any added hard surface changes how water moves. We look at the existing grade, downspouts, and where runoff goes before setting slope, and drainage is evaluated individually per property.
Many Cypress-area master-planned communities require architectural review for backyard improvements. Requirements differ by community, so confirm with your HOA before scheduling.
