Concrete pavers are manufactured units set over a compacted base and bedding layer rather than poured in place. Because the surface is made of individual pieces, the joints absorb small movement, individual units can be lifted and reset, and pattern and color options are far broader than with a poured slab.

Paver work lives or dies on the base beneath it. Our installations focus on excavation depth, compaction, bedding, and edge restraint — the parts nobody sees but that determine whether the surface stays flat and tight over time.

Where Pavers Work Well

Pavers are a segmental surface — many small units over a compacted base. That structure suits some parts of a property better than others.

Patios and seating areas
Pattern and border options make a paver patio read as a designed room, and individual units can be replaced if one gets stained.
Walkways and garden paths
Curves are easy to follow with units, and a paver path can be lifted and reset if a tree root or settlement lifts a section.
Driveway aprons and accents

Pavers vs. Poured Concrete

This is the choice most homeowners are actually making. Neither surface is universally better; they behave differently.

Installed cost
Poured concrete is typically lower per square foot for a comparable area. Paver cost rises with unit selection, pattern complexity, and cutting.
Base work
Both depend on the ground beneath. Pavers rely on a compacted aggregate base and edge restraint; poured concrete relies on prepared subgrade, reinforcement, and joints.
Appearance
Pavers offer pattern, unit shape, and multi-color options out of the box. Poured concrete achieves visual interest through finish, color, and stamping.
Repairs
Individual pavers lift and replace. Poured concrete is patched or a section is replaced, and matching the original color is imperfect.
Movement over time
Pavers can settle at joints and be reset. Poured slabs resist movement until they crack, then the crack is permanent unless the section is replaced.
Upkeep
Pavers need joint sand and weed attention. Poured decorative concrete needs resealing. A plain broom finish needs the least of either.

Nearly every failed paver installation comes back to the base. Excavation depth, base material, compaction in lifts, bedding consistency, and edge restraint are the core of the job, and the right depth depends on the soil and the loads at your property.

  • Base material placed and compacted in lifts rather than all at once
  • A consistent bedding layer screeded before units are set

Paver projects carry more material and labor per square foot than poured flatwork, and the base work below the surface is a real part of the cost.

Details That Shape the Project

Base and Edge Restraint Decide the Outcome

Almost every failed paver installation traces back to the same two things: a base that wasn't compacted properly and edges that weren't restrained. The units themselves rarely fail. What fails is what's under and beside them.

The base has to be excavated to the right depth for the intended use, built in layers, and compacted so it doesn't consolidate later under traffic. The edge restraint holds the outer units in position so the field can't creep outward — because once the perimeter spreads, the joints inside open and the pattern loses its lock.

  • Excavation depth set by intended use and site conditions, not a fixed number
  • Base built and compacted in layers rather than in one lift
  • Bedding layer screeded to a consistent thickness under the units
  • Edge restraint at every free edge, including curves and steps
  • Joint sand installed and compacted so the field locks together

Pavers on Cypress-Area Soil

The clay soils common across Cypress, Bridgeland, and Hockley expand when wet and shrink when dry, and that movement is what makes any exterior surface here worth planning carefully. Pavers respond to that movement differently than a slab: a segmental surface can shift slightly and be reset, where a slab cracks.

That flexibility is not a substitute for preparation. Poor drainage under a paver field still causes problems — the base saturates, consolidates, and the surface goes uneven. Where water is already an issue on the property, that gets addressed as part of the scope rather than left for the surface to cope with.

What We Look At During the Site Visit

Paver pricing does not come off a rate card, because two projects with identical square footage can differ substantially once the site is factored in. The walk of your property is what turns a rough idea into a written number.

We measure the area, look at how water currently moves across it, check what has to come out first, and see how material and equipment can physically reach the work area. Layout and cutting matter too — a field with many angled cuts and a detailed border takes more time than a simple rectangle of the same size.

Paver Maintenance and Aftercare

Pavers are the easiest surface to repair because units can be lifted and reset. Most upkeep is about joints and cleanliness.

  • Sweep and rinse periodically; keep organic debris out of the joints
  • Top off joint sand as needed over the years
  • Address weeds or ants in joints early before they loosen units
  • Consider sealing for stain resistance and color depth, if we recommend it
  • Call us for spot resets rather than tolerating a settled area
