Site Preparation, Drainage and Access
Driveways in this part of Harris County sit on clay soils that expand when wet and shrink through a dry August. That movement is normal and it never fully stops, so the useful question is not how to prevent it but how the slab is prepared, jointed, and drained so movement shows up as planned joint activity rather than random cracking.
Grade is the other half of it. Water needs a path off the surface and away from the garage and the house. On flatter Cypress lots the fall available between the street and the garage slab is limited, so where the water goes is a design decision made on site — not something that can be assumed from a photo.
Access affects both scope and cost. A front driveway with open street frontage is straightforward. A rear parking area reached through a side yard, past irrigation, fencing, and a gate, involves protecting what stays, moving material further, and sometimes pumping concrete instead of chuting it.
- Removal and haul-off of any existing concrete, asphalt, or gravel in the footprint
- Subgrade condition, soft spots, and moisture on the day of the pour
- Fall across the surface so water leaves rather than standing near the garage
- Tie-in elevations at the city sidewalk, apron, garage slab, and any existing concrete
- Irrigation lines, utility locates, tree roots, and landscaping along the path of work
- Equipment and delivery access, including gates, side-yard width, and overhead clearance
