Concrete resurfacing puts a new wearing surface over an existing exterior slab instead of removing it. A cementitious overlay or coating is bonded to the prepared concrete, then finished — smooth, textured, stained, or stamped — so a sound but tired slab reads as new work.
The important part is what happens before anything is applied. A resurfacing product only performs as well as the slab under it and the preparation done to it, so the surface has to be cleaned, profiled, and evaluated first. Resurfacing is priced from the condition of the slab and the finish selected, not by a rate per square foot alone. Two patios the same size can price very differently once preparation is understood.
- Area to be resurfaced and how broken up it is by steps, edges, and obstacles
- How much preparation the existing surface needs, including removal of old coatings
- Crack and joint treatment required before the overlay goes down
- The finish selected — a plain texture and a stamped, multi-color overlay are not comparable
