An RV or shop pad is a concrete slab built for heavier and more concentrated loads than a typical driveway. A motorhome, loaded trailer, or shop equipment puts weight through a small number of contact points, so thickness, reinforcement, and subgrade preparation are evaluated specifically for what you're parking or operating on the pad.

Planning a Pad Around What Will Actually Use It

A pad is a purpose-built surface. Nearly every decision about it follows from one question: what is going to sit on it, and how does that thing get there?

What it carries
The weight and how it's concentrated — a coach on leveling jacks loads the surface very differently than a trailer resting on tires. Requirements follow from that, not from a standard detail.
How it arrives
Backing a long coach needs approach and swing room. A pad that fits the vehicle but can't be reached without a three-point turn across the lawn isn't finished planning.
Overall dimensions
Length plus maneuvering room, and extra width if slides or an awning will extend. We lay it out on the ground during the site visit so you can see it.
Where water goes
A large flat surface changes drainage on the property. Slope and the path water takes off the pad are planned before forming, not discovered later.
The tie-in
Most pads connect to an existing drive by an access strip or widened section. How the new concrete meets the old is a detail in the written scope.
What sits on it later
If a shop or metal building is going up on the slab, the building drawings change the dimensions, edge details, and anchor placement. Send them early.

Options

Pad vs. Driveway Extension

Both add concrete beside what you already have. They're planned around different things, and picking the wrong one is a common source of regret.

What it's for
An extension widens or lengthens a driveway for ordinary vehicle use. A pad is built for one defined use — a coach, a trailer, equipment, or a structure.
How it's sized
An extension is sized to the drive and the parking it adds. A pad is sized to the specific item using it, including approach and clearance.
Position on the lot
Extensions run with the existing drive. Pads often sit to the side, behind a gate, or out toward a barn or shop, which changes access and cost.
Load assumptions
Cars and light trucks are one set of assumptions. A heavy coach, a loaded trailer, or equipment is another, and the design follows the actual use.
Approvals
Extensions frequently raise HOA and setback questions. Pads raise those plus visible-parking restrictions in many Cypress-area communities. Both get verified per address.
How to choose
If you mainly need more room for daily vehicles, that's an extension. If one specific heavy thing needs a home, that's a pad. Some properties get both.

Pad Preparation Considerations

Heavy pads magnify anything wrong with the subgrade. Prep focuses on stable ground, compaction, and getting water off and away from the pad and from anything stored on it.

Pads price differently from ordinary flatwork because the loads change the reinforcement, thickness, and prep. Estimates are written from your actual equipment and site.

Details That Shape the Project

Why We Won't Quote a Universal Thickness

Homeowners often arrive with a number they've read online for how thick an RV pad should be. We don't repeat those numbers as a specification, because thickness on its own doesn't tell you whether a pad will perform.

What matters is the combination: the load and how it's concentrated, the reinforcement approach, the condition and preparation of the ground underneath, and how water behaves on that part of the property. A thicker slab over poorly prepared, poorly drained ground is not a solution. The requirements for your pad are set from your site and your intended use, and stated in your written estimate.

Acreage and Access North of Cypress

Pad work on larger properties around Tomball, Hockley, and Magnolia tends to look different than a subdivision job. There's usually more room, but the pad is farther from the road, and getting trucks and material to the location can be the largest single variable in the estimate.

Long approach runs, soft ground on the route in, gates that are narrower than they look, and overhead lines all affect how the work is staged. We check the access route during the site visit, because a pad that is straightforward to pour and hard to reach still costs what it costs to reach.

  • Distance from the road or existing drive to the pad location
  • Ground condition along the route in, particularly after rain
  • Gate widths, turning room, and overhead clearance
  • Whether pumping is needed to place concrete at the location
  • Where spoil from excavation can be placed or whether it hauls off
  • Existing gravel, base, or slab to be removed first

Slabs for Metal Shop Buildings

When a metal building is going on the slab, the building comes first in the planning even though the concrete is poured first. The supplier's drawings determine the footprint dimensions, the edge detailing, and where anchors have to land — and none of that is convenient to correct after the pour.

Send us the drawings as early as you have them. Where the structure, its loads, or the site conditions call for engineered input or an applicable approval, we identify it before work is scheduled rather than telling you it isn't needed. Our scope on those projects is the exterior slab and site work; we don't build the structure itself.

Aftercare

Pad Maintenance and Aftercare

Heavy pads need the full cure period respected before the real load arrives. That's the single most important aftercare item on this type of project.

  • Keep the RV, trailer, or equipment off until we confirm the cure is complete
  • Use jack pads under stabilizers to spread concentrated loads
  • Clean up fuel, oil, and hydraulic fluid promptly
  • Keep drainage paths around the pad clear
  • Watch for edge chipping from repeated tire loading right at the perimeter
