The short answer
Driveway cost is driven by how much surface is being built, how much has to come out first, how hard the site is to work in, how the slab is specified, and what happens to the water afterwards. Any estimate that does not describe those things is a number without a scope behind it.
CXS does not publish a price list, because a fair driveway number comes from measuring the property and looking at the existing conditions. What follows is the list of things we are measuring and pricing.
Square footage and layout
Area is the base variable, but shape matters too. A straight rectangular drive forms quickly. Curves, radius returns, flare-outs at the street, turnarounds and irregular edges add forming labor and material waste per square foot.

Removal and disposal of existing concrete
Replacing a driveway includes breaking out and hauling away the old slab. Thickness, reinforcement inside the old concrete, and how much of it there is all change that line. Heavily reinforced or unusually thick slabs take longer to break and produce more material to haul.

Site access
Access is one of the most underrated cost factors. A front driveway a truck can reach directly is very different from a rear pad behind a narrow gate, where material may need to be wheeled, pumped or buggied in.
- Room for a mixer truck, a pump or a buggy route.
- Gate widths, side-yard clearances and overhead lines.
- Utilities, irrigation and landscaping that must be protected or worked around.
- Corner lots, shared drives and street staging limitations.
Base preparation and grading
What is under a slab does more for its lifespan than anything visible. Subgrade work includes stripping unsuitable material, correcting soft spots, bringing the pad to a consistent grade and compacting it. On the clay soils common across northwest Harris County, uniform support is the point — a slab firmly supported at one end and loosely at the other is the classic setup for a crack.
Where fill or a base course is needed to reach grade, that material and the labor to place it are part of the estimate.
Reinforcement, thickness and intended vehicle use
Specification follows use. A driveway that carries two passenger vehicles is not specified the same way as one that regularly parks a dually, a work trailer or an RV. Thickened sections, heavier reinforcement and different jointing may all apply where concentrated loads occur.
Reinforcement is normally welded wire or reinforcing bar on a grid, supported so it sits inside the slab. That support work is labor, and skipping it is one of the quiet ways a low bid gets low.

- Vehicle types that will actually use the surface, including future ones.
Finish and jointing
A standard broom finish is the residential default and the most economical. Decorative options — stamped patterns, borders, integral color, saw-cut detailing or exposed aggregate — add material and skilled finishing time. Decorative and stamped concrete is a separate scope decision worth pricing intentionally rather than assuming.
Drainage and the street edge
New concrete changes where water goes. Planning slopes so runoff moves away from the garage and foundation is part of a properly scoped driveway, and in some cases a trench drain, a regraded edge or coordinating with existing yard drainage is warranted.
Work that touches the sidewalk, culvert or public approach at the street is regulated differently than work entirely on private property. Requirements may vary based on the property, subdivision, project scope and whether work involves public right-of-way, so those are confirmed for your address rather than assumed.
Widening and extensions instead of full replacement
If the existing driveway is sound and the real problem is that it is too narrow or too short, adding surface can be a smaller scope than replacing everything. Widening, side extensions and parking pads are priced by the added area plus the tie-in detailing, grading and drainage adjustments they require.
Why price per square foot alone can be misleading
A per-square-foot figure hides everything that actually differs between bids. Two quotes at different rates may describe different thicknesses, different reinforcement, different amounts of removal, and different levels of base work — or one may exclude haul-off and grading entirely.
Compare scopes side by side instead: thickness, reinforcement, base preparation, removal and disposal, jointing plan, finish, drainage work, and what is explicitly excluded. When those match, the numbers become comparable.

- Ask whether removal, haul-off and disposal are included.
- Ask what base preparation is assumed and what happens if soft spots are found.
- Ask how water leaves the driveway once the new slab is in.
