How each behaves on Gulf Coast clay
Cypress-area soils swell when saturated and shrink during dry spells, and both surfaces respond to that movement. A slab handles it as one piece: reinforcement holds any crack tight and control joints decide where the crack goes. A paver field handles it as many pieces: small movements get absorbed at the joints, but larger settlement shows up as an uneven area you can feel underfoot.
In both cases the base is the thing that determines the outcome. A slab over a poorly compacted or inconsistent subgrade will crack in the wrong place. A paver field over a thin or uneven base will settle in patches. The material choice matters less than what is under it.
By application
- Patios: both work. Poured concrete is simpler to keep clean and to furnish; pavers give more visual texture and let you replace a stained unit.
- Walkways: poured concrete suits long straight or gently curved runs; pavers suit meandering paths and tight garden transitions.
- Pool-area transitions: both are used. Slip resistance when wet, surface temperature in direct sun and how the surface meets coping are the deciding details.
- Outdoor entertaining areas: a continuous slab is easier for tables and chairs; pavers can define zones with borders and color changes.
- Areas connecting to existing concrete: matching a poured surface to poured work is generally cleaner than mixing surface types at a busy transition.

When poured concrete may make sense

- The area is large and reasonably open, so forming and placing are efficient.
- You are tying into existing concrete — a driveway, porch or walkway.
- Furniture is moved around often and you would rather not have joint lines catching chair legs.
- You prefer an understated look, or you want a decorative pattern without a modular joint grid.
When pavers may make sense
- You want a specific pattern, border or color combination that a poured surface will not give you.
- You value being able to lift and reset a small area rather than dealing with a section repair.
- The layout is irregular, curved or broken into several small zones.
- You anticipate future work under the surface and want to be able to take part of it up and put it back.
- You accept periodic joint maintenance in exchange for that flexibility.
What a proper paver installation includes
The most common paver failure has nothing to do with the pavers. It is an under-built or poorly compacted base, or a missing edge restraint. Both problems show up as rutting, spreading joints and rocking units within a few seasons.
- Excavation to a depth that accommodates base, bedding and paver thickness.
- A compacted aggregate base placed in lifts, with depth matched to the traffic load.
- A screeded bedding layer of consistent thickness — not used to correct base grade.
- Edge restraint on every free edge; without it, the field spreads and joints open.
- Joint sand, compaction of the field, and a plan for how water leaves the surface.
Maintenance realities
- Pavers: periodic joint sand replenishment, occasional weed and ant control in joints, optional sealing, and re-leveling of settled areas.
- Concrete: joint maintenance where sealant is used, cleaning, optional sealing, and panel replacement if a section fails.
- Both: keeping water moving away, and keeping soil and mulch from building against edges.

- Where will water go once this surface exists, and where does it currently go?

- Is the finish slip-resistant enough for how the area gets used when wet?
- What is in writing about prep, reinforcement or base depth, edging and drainage?
