Appearance and pattern
Stamped concrete is textured with mats while the slab is still workable, so the pattern flows across the whole surface with no gaps. Ashlar slate, flagstone, wood plank and running-bond patterns are all common. Because the surface is continuous, large areas read as a single expanse rather than as a grid.
Pavers build the pattern from individual units. Herringbone, running bond, basketweave and modular multi-size layouts are all standard, and because the units are manufactured, dimensions and edges are highly consistent. The joint lines are real, which some homeowners specifically want and others specifically don't.

Color and customization
Stamped concrete gets its color from integral color in the mix, from color hardener applied at the surface, and from release agents that add secondary tones in the texture. That layering is what produces variation across the surface, and it is applied on site — so the result is somewhat unique to your pour and to the crew placing it.
Paver color comes from the manufacturer. That means you can see the exact product before you commit, and reordering the same unit later is generally possible. It also means your palette is what the product line offers.
Borders are handled differently too. Stamped work uses hand-tooled bands, saw-cut lines or a contrasting pattern; pavers use a physically different unit or color as a soldier course. Both look deliberate when planned before placement rather than added at the end.
Installation method
A stamped patio is a concrete pour with a decorative process layered on top of it: subgrade prep, forming, reinforcement, placement, color, stamping, detailing, then curing and sealing. The pattern work happens inside a short window while the concrete is workable, which is why stamped placements run with a larger crew and tight scheduling around weather.
A paver installation is mostly earthwork and base building: excavation, a compacted aggregate base, a screeded bedding layer, laying and cutting units, edge restraint, then joint material and compaction. The visible surface goes down last and relatively quickly; the days before it are what determine whether it stays flat.
Repairs, movement and maintenance
This is where the two genuinely diverge. If a paver is stained, chipped or sits low, it can be lifted, the bedding corrected and the unit reset or swapped — often with a spare from the original order. If a stamped surface cracks or is damaged, the repair is a concrete repair, and matching color and pattern across a patch is difficult to do invisibly.
On movement, a stamped slab behaves like any slab: control joints steer shrinkage cracking, and reinforcement holds cracks tight. Those joints are usually integrated into the pattern so they read as part of the design. A paver field absorbs small movement at its joints, but broader settlement shows as an uneven patch that needs to be lifted and re-based.
Maintenance also differs in kind. Stamped concrete is cleaned and resealed periodically — the sealer is what carries the color depth and sheen, and how often it needs renewing depends on sun exposure, traffic and the product used, so follow the specification for the sealer actually applied. Pavers are cleaned, and joint material is topped up as it works out over time.
